Since early 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic has affected many aspects of people’s lives. More than 20 countries have released postage stamps to honor the fight against the virus.

The colorful stamps recognize the sacrifices made by doctors, nurses, and other essential workers. Some show Covid-safe behaviors like social distancing and hand washing.

Inspired by the shortage early in the pandemic, Austria designed a stamp out of toilet paper! It was a challenge to create. The backs of many stamps are licked to activate their glue. “But if the toilet paper gets wet, it disintegrates,” says Markus Leitgeb, who works for Austrian Post. Self-adhesive foil on the stamp makes it strong and sticky.
